Fall Checklist for Getting Your Heater Ready for the Season

Nothing is worse that a heating system failure on a chilly day. Now is ensure your heater is ready for the season. Stay warm this winter by making sure your heater works safely and efficiently all season long.

Checklist for Getting Your Heater Ready for the Season:
- Turn Off Power: Turning off the power to the heating unit should be the first step before beginning any maintenance. Either shut off the circuit breaker or disconnect switch.
- Clean or Replace Air Filters: Replace or clean filters as dirty or clogged filters can reduce efficiency and airflow.
- Inspect Vents and Registers: Clean out all vents and registers to be sure they have proper airflow. Move any furniture or item that could be obstructing airflow.
- Test the Thermostat: Make sure the thermostat is working properly. Refresh the batteries, if needed. Set the thermostat to a higher temperature to make sure it turns on and produces heat.
- Clean and Dust: Clean the area around the furnace or heat pump. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean the interior components carefully.
- Check for Unusual Noises: When you turn on your heating system, listen for unusual noises such as banging, whistling, or rattling. These can be signs of issues that need attention.
- Schedule Professional Inspection: Have a professional come and inspect for leaks, and signs of damage or need for lubrication. A technician can perform a thorough checkup and address any issues you may have missed.
